Co-Parenting and Jewish Holidays: A Practical Guide
The Hanukkah Problem
Every November, the same question starts popping up: "When is Hanukkah this year?"
Unlike Christmas, which is reliably December 25, Hanukkah moves. Sometimes late November, sometimes late December.
Why Jewish Holidays Move (But Not Like Islamic Holidays)
The Hebrew calendar is a lunar-solar hybrid.
- Lunar Base: Months track the moon (~29.5 days).
- Solar Adjustment: A 13th leap month (Adar II) is added 7 times every 19 years to keep seasons aligned.
Result: Holidays move within a range but stay in the same season. Hanukkah is always fall/winter.
Major Jewish Holidays Co-Parents Need to Know
High Holy Days (Fall)
- Rosh Hashanah: Jewish New Year (2 days)
- Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement (1 day, fasting)
- Sukkot: Festival of Booths (7 days)
Other Major Holidays
- Hanukkah: Festival of Lights (8 days, Winter)
- Passover: Exodus celebration (8 days, Spring)
- Purim: Joyous festival (1 day, Spring)
Common Custody Challenges
- Multi-Day Observances: Hanukkah is 8 nights. Do you split it? Trade years?
- Varying Observance Levels: Orthodox families differ from Reform families.
- Sunset Start Times: Jewish holidays begin at sunset, not midnight. "December 25" might mean the evening of Dec 24 to evening of Dec 25.
Practical Solutions
1. Specify Which Holidays and Duration
Don't be vague. List exactly: "Rosh Hashanah (both days), Yom Kippur (full day), first two nights of Passover."
2. Define Start/End Times Based on Sunset
Use "Sunset on the evening before..." or practical times like "Pickup at 4:00 PM".
3. Alternate or Split Multi-Day Holidays
For Hanukkah/Passover:
- Option A: Alternate years (Mom gets even years, Dad gets odd).
- Option B: Split the holiday (Mom nights 1-4, Dad nights 5-8).
- Option C: Prioritize specific days (Mom gets first Seder, Dad gets second).
4. Use Accurate Date Calculation
Specify "According to the Hebrew calendar" and use a tool like Hebcal or CoParentCompass.
